What To Think and How to Pray for Donald Trump

Trying to become the second U.S. president in history (after Grover Cleveland) to serve two non-consecutive terms, Donald Trump is on his way to the Republican nomination after resounding victories in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Grover Cleveland, also a New Yorker, served as president 1885-1889, and again from 1893-1897.

Trump is possibly the most known personality in the world and maybe the most controversial.

What should we think about Donald J. Trump and how should we pray for him?

If you are an American, you will be making an important decision about Donald Trump on November 5, 2024 when you vote for him, Joe Biden, or another candidate for president of the United States. 

It’s a crucial election with much at stake for the U.S. the West, and the world. 

I want to share my heart thoughts about Donald Trump and ask you to consider yours carefully. I will also mention how we can pray for him in the coming months or years.

I’ve never met Mr. Trump. The only president I had the pleasure of meeting was Ronald Reagan during his presidency while pioneering YWAM bases in Washington, D.C. and Virginia (1980-88). Reagan’s first-ever evangelical liaison–Carolyn Sundseth–was a former YWAMer who invited me to the White House on a number of occasions.

The most memorable was June 6, 1983, when Shirley and I met President Reagan when she was eight months pregnant with our twins. I had written a book that favored Reagan in the 1976 presidential race (What About Jimmy Carter?) and was glad when he won in 1980. Reagan was sworn into office (twice) with his hand on a Bible turned to 2 Chronicles 7:14:

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

That famous passage has been a life scripture and calling for me.

I probably prayed for Ronald Reagan more than any president in my lifetime. His love of country, winsome personality, communicational skills, and sound policies made him a focus of intercession for millions of praying Americans.

Despite his faults.

Yes, all human beings, including presidents, have them. 

Why pray for our national leaders? In today’s world, the president of the United States influences billions of people for good or for evil.

I have a number of friends who know and worked with Donald Trump during his first term. One was a student of mine at Faith International University who served in Trump’s “cabinet” of spiritual advisors. 

Here are my thoughts on a possible second presidency for the Donald.

Donald Trump was not my first choice for president in 2016–nor this year. He was about third on my list both years. But I voted for him twice for the following reasons:

• His leadership qualities (successful businessman) and worldview were head and shoulders above Hillary Clinton’s and the Democratic Party. In their current mindset, the Democrats hate traditional America and wants to destroy its faith, families, and freedom. 
• His public policies were just as good or even better than Reagan’s. For example, he appointed three good justices to the Supreme Court and moved Israel’s embassy to Jerusalem, its true capital. 

Like many people, I do not like Donald Trump’s petty personality and his sordid background (womanizer). But I learned a long time ago that though personality and character are important in political leaders, they primarily lead through their policies–which affect millions of people.

FDR and JFK had their personal foibles also, but their policies helped win World War II and inspire human beings to fly to the moon.

How a person legislates should be the key concern behind your vote.

We already know how Donald Trump will govern:

• The Return to Mexico policy will be restored and the south border will be secured against illegal invasion. 
• The regulatory state will be reigned in and America will become energy independent again.
• The right to life will be cherished and encouraged.
• Originalist justices will be nominated to federal benches and SCOTUS.
• Inflation will be curbed though lower taxation and spending. 
• Men will be kept out of women’s bathrooms and athletic programs.
• Small business will be unleased to bring blessing to the America people.
• America’s military will be respected and not vilified (like in Afghanistan).
• God, family, marriage, and country will be honored. 

We also know the policies of President Biden or another democrat. Anti-God, prayer, Bible, free enterprise, supporting gender confusion, weaponization of government, defunding the police, DA’s who don’t prosecute crime, and massive spending with chronic inflation.

Yes, the Democratic Party hates America (Mark Levin’s bestselling book). They are doing everything in their power to implode it into a depraved socialist state. 

In fact, the Democratic Party doesn’t need to support individual candidates anymore. The mentally diminished Joe Biden wasn’t elected in 2020 because of his intellect and charisma, but through a national Democrat money machine, possible fraudulent voting, and the help and collusion of the Deep State and liberal media.  

America cannot withstand many more years of Democratic destruction and remain the “land of the free and the home of brave.” And guess who is the biggest threat to their power as evidenced by fake news, Russia collusion., impeachment, bogus lawsuits, etc.?

Donald Trump.

“The enemy (Donald Trump) of your enemy (evil forces in our nation) is your friend.” 

We would be wise to vote for Donald Trump. 

He’s not ideal. I get that. But the best biblical analogy comes from Judges when Israel became tribal, turned away from God’s laws and needed “strongmen” (judges) to help deliver them from their apathy and sins.

Two judges remind me of Donald Trump. First is Jephthah (Judges 11-12) who led the Israelites in battle against Ammon and in exchange for defeating the Ammonites made a vow to sacrifice whatever would came out of the door of his home. When his daughter was the first to emerge, he regretted the vow which bound him to sacrifice her.

Jephthah was a strong but impulsive man. 

But most similar to Trump is Samson (Judges 13-16) who had a problem with lust when he was young and overly leaned on his strength and enlarged ego. Sound familiar? But God used him in a round-a-bout to deliver the nation from the Philistines. 

In our day, when the Church is napping socially and failing to be the salt and light of public policy, God has seemingly raised up a modern-day Samson–Donald Trump–to point us back to his wise principles for living–despite Trump’s obvious flaws.

Why should we pray for our national leaders? 

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:1,2).

How should we pray for Donald Trump? That he would grow his character and commitment to God. That he would surround himself with wise people who can point the nation to both spiritual revival and social renewal–just like King Josiah did (2 Chronicles 34). That God would protect him from assassination (we remember the 1960s).

Trump was sworn in on January 20, 2017 by placing his hands on Abraham Lincoln’s Bible. 

Let’s ask God to give him the wisdom, courage, and faith of our 16th president.
